As with many symbols, there are two ways to get an em dash, or its shorter cousin the en dash, to appear on a page: by using a keyboard shortcut or the Special Character panel. When Greek mode is entered, the status bar mode indicator switches to 2-D Greek. The shortcut key combination Ctrl + Shift + G (Command + Shift + G in Mac) places the editor in a Greek mode, which makes the next character entered a Greek character.

If the usual keystroke shortcuts don’t work on your laptop, though, it can’t hurt to try attaching an external full keyboard or numeric keypad. The shortcut is faster than moving your hands from the keyboard, highlighting with the mouse, right-clicking, selecting copy, and returning to the keyboard. To insert an em dash, click where you want to insert the em dash and then press and hold Alt and then type 8212 on the numeric keypad.
